At least 10 people lost their lives and 33 remain missing after flash floods swept through parts of China’s northwestern Gansu province, Chinese state media reported on Friday.

Triggered by torrential rains since Thursday, the floods and at least one landslide struck mountainous areas of Yuzhong County near Lanzhou city.

According to news agency Associated Press, rain also disrupted electricity and telecommunication services in the Xinglong mountain region, cutting off more than 4,000 residents across four villages.

In the wake of the situation, Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out" rescue efforts.

The disaster in Gansu comes amid record-breaking rainfall across several parts of China. In the southern province of Guangdong, authorities are battling some of the heaviest August rains since the 19th century. Urban streets have been inundated, roads damaged, trees toppled, and underground cables exposed as teams work to clear debris and pump out floodwaters.

The heavy downpour also disrupted air travel, with over 360 flights cancelled and more than 300 delayed at Guangzhou’s Baiyun Airport on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

The stagnant floodwaters have raised public health concerns, with over 7,000 cases of chikungunya—a mosquito-borne illness—already reported in Guangdong. Health authorities warn of further outbreaks as breeding conditions worsen.

China has been grappling with weeks of extreme weather since July. The East Asian monsoon has stalled over the northern and southern regions, bringing prolonged rainfall that experts attribute to climate change. The resulting floods have displaced thousands, devastated farmland, and threatened infrastructure worth billions.

In response, Beijing has allocated over 1 billion yuan (approximately $139 million) in disaster relief funds for hard-hit provinces including Gansu, Guangdong, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia.
