At least 33 people have been killed following simultaneous attacks by Islamic militants in north-west Nigeria, according to police reports.

The assault occurred on Wednesday in the Biu community of Kebbi state, police spokesman Bashir Usman stated in a briefing late Thursday night.

The attackers crossed over from Sokoto state, parts of which are controlled by the Lakurawa insurgent group, Usman explained.

“Preliminary investigations confirm that armed Lakurawa militants entered the area to rustle cattle," he said, adding that security personnel have been dispatched to restore order.

The Lakurawa group operates in parts of north-western Nigeria, particularly around communities in Sokoto state. The armed group is notorious for engaging in cattle rustling, village raids, and kidnappings for ransom.

Northern Nigeria is currently facing a complex security crisis with both Islamic militants and armed criminal gangs involved in kidnappings for ransom.

The West African nation is engaged in security cooperation with the U.S. after initial diplomatic tensions. Earlier this week, the Nigerian military announced the arrival of 100 U.S. troops to help train its forces in combating armed groups.
