5 Killed, Several Injured In Ukraine's Kharkiv As Russian Missile Hits Merefa

Russian missile strike on Merefa region kills five and injures at least 18, officials say civilian infrastructure was hit with an Iskander type ballistic missile.

A Russian missile strike on the town of Merefa in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region killed five people and wounded several others on Monday, according to Ukrainian officials, in what authorities described as an attack on civilian infrastructure far from the front line.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said the strike caused extensive damage across the town, hitting at least 10 houses, an administrative building, four shops, a car repair workshop and a food establishment.

“Today during the day, the occupiers attacked civilian infrastructure of a town quite far from the front with a missile," Syniehubov wrote on Telegram.

He said two men and three women were killed and 18 other people injured. Four of the wounded were taken to hospital in serious condition.

Regional prosecutors said preliminary information indicated that Russian forces had used an Iskander-type ballistic missile in the attack.

Emergency services released photographs from the scene showing a building with its roof torn open and windows blown out, a firefighter extinguishing a burning car, and rescuers treating a woman lying on the ground with her face and hands covered in blood.

There was no immediate comment from Russia. Moscow has repeatedly denied intentionally targeting civilians during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, although its strikes have killed thousands of non-combatants.

Ukraine has also carried out attacks that have hit civilian targets in Russia or in Russian-occupied territory, but on a much smaller scale.
