West Asia Conflict: In a major relief for guests and passengers stuck in United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid escalating tensions in the region and the subsequent flight disruptions, Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) on Sunday ordered hotels across the emirate to allow stranded guests to extend their stay, with the government stepping in to cover the additional costs.

In an official communication dated February 28, 2026, addressed to hotel establishment general managers, DCT Abu Dhabi stated that guests who have reached their check-out date but are unable to travel due to circumstances beyond their control must be allowed to extend their stay until they are able to depart.

DCT clarified that neither hotels nor guests would bear the financial burden of the extended accommodation. “The cost of the extended stay will be covered by DCT, Abu Dhabi," the notice said, asking hotels to forward related invoices to the department’s designated email address.

Hotels have also been advised to coordinate with the department’s Business Continuity Team for operational support.

Additionally, Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism also directed hotel operators to permit affected guests to extend their stays under the same terms as their original bookings.

The move comes as regional airspace restrictions and flight cancellations linked to the Iran–Israel escalation have left an estimated around 20,000 tourists and transit passengers stranded in the UAE, according to news reports.

Netizens Hail ‘People-First’ Move

The move has drawn positive reactions on social media, with many lauding it as a “people-first" response.

Helios Capital founder Samir Arora shared a copy of the directive on X, praising the UAE’s proactive and humanitarian approach during the crisis.

Users on X compared Abu Dhabi’s policy to surge pricing elsewhere during crises.

One reaction read, “Had it been any other place, they would have tripled the prices in such emergencies."

Another commented, “This is absolutely a warm gesture from Emirate of Abu Dhabi."

Others called it “true example for a tourist destination" and “Great to see humans being treated humanly… Never saw anything like this in India."

A resident added, “That’s why everyone who lives here, loves UAE."

Another commented, “From issuing spot emergency visas to extending hotel stays for people stranded, the UAE government is teaching us how to handle a crisis like a boss!"
