Pakistan is preparing for major military operations and possible cross-border airstrikes targeting Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts and militant infrastructure across the Durand Line following the deadly Bannu blasts that killed 15 policemen on the night of May 9-10, top security sources told News18.
According to sources, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir are expected to hold a high-level meeting on Monday to discuss the scale, timing and operational details of the proposed military response against the TTP and what Islamabad describes as facilitators within the Afghan Taliban regime.
“Special directives have already been issued to all law enforcement and security agencies for a major military operation against militants," a top security source said.
The proposed operations are expected to target militant camps, logistical networks and suspected TTP hideouts located along and across the Durand Line, the disputed border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Sources said Pakistan is also preparing to send a “stern warning" to the Taliban government in Kabul over alleged support and safe havens being provided to TTP operatives involved in attacks inside Pakistan.
The development comes after the Bannu blasts triggered renewed pressure on Pakistan’s security establishment to intensify counterterror operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and adjoining border areas.
According to security sources, Islamabad is now considering resuming “Operation Ghazab Lil-Haq" with “full force" after a temporary operational pause during Eid-ul-Fitr earlier this year.
Operation Ghazab Lil-Haq was launched by Pakistan on February 26 this year against Afghan Taliban-linked operatives and allied militant groups, including the TTP and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) amid escalating cross-border tensions.
As per figures released by Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in April, the operation had resulted in around 796 deaths, over 1,043 injuries and the destruction of 286 border check posts.
Security officials said key decisions regarding the nature of the operations, including the possibility of coordinated airstrikes, are likely to be taken after Monday’s meeting between the prime minister and military leadership.
The fresh escalation could further strain already tense ties between Islamabad and Kabul, which have deteriorated sharply over repeated accusations by Pakistan that Afghan soil is being used by the TTP to launch attacks across the border.
