A security breach at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has sent shockwaves through social media, transforming the heavily guarded perimeter of the White House into a viral flashpoint. Multiple gunshots were reportedly heard outside the White House on Sunday, triggering a massive security response while President Donald Trump was inside the complex during Iran-related negotiations, AFP reported.
According to law enforcement sources, somewhere between 10 and 20 gunshots were reportedly fired after a suspect targeted a US Secret Service security booth near the White House, CBS News reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The suspect Nasire Best was shot dead after Secret Service agents returned fire, while a bystander sustained injuries, and no officers were believed to have been hit.
As the perimeter locked down, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the bureau’s rapid deployment, stating:
“FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds – we will update the public as we’re able."
Sprinting For Safety: Media Witness The Scene
The immediate panic was captured in real-time by journalists stationed on the executive mansion’s grounds. An ABC journalist said media personnel were rushed to the press briefing room after dozens of gunshots were reportedly heard near the White House.

ABC journalist Selina Wang recounted the frantic moment on her X profile, writing: “I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now."
Internet Reacts To Shooting Near White House
As news of the gunfire rippled across global feeds, users immediately took to X to question the vulnerability of the world’s most tightly patrolled civilian fortress. While many expressed deep grief, others channeled their shock into debates over policy, geopolitical safety, and pure skepticism.
One user voiced immediate heartbreak over the incident: “Absolutely heartbreaking. Another senseless act of violence right outside the White House. One suspect dead, one bystander injured… when will this madness end? Prayers for the injured and all those who protect us every day."
For international observers, the shooting highlighted ongoing systemic concerns regarding domestic weapon access. Comments included:
“Too much weapons in the USA."
“When it is that easy to buy a weapon in the USA, don´t be afraid to be killed at any time. I don´t even know how to buy a weapon in my country."
Others pointed out how everyone in the country seem to be desensitized to firearm violence: “The fact that people in America barely even react to hearing gunshots anymore is actually terrifying."
As is common with high-profile incidents in Washington, people began the blame game, looking for people to hold responsible: “The White House that is supposed to be the safest place on earth is coming under increasing attacks under President Trump. What’s going on?"
Conversely, counter-arguments emerged defending the current status quo by targeting opposition history: “Where was all this shit when Joe Biden was president goes to show democrats are the party of violence and corruption"
The sheer alarm over personal safety led some users to openly question their future in the United States, with one user asking: “Hey @grok, are we still safe in the US? Should I return to Kenya?"
