As a fierce snowstorm swept across the US during the weekend, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was busy with managing the city’s storm response, stopped to help shovel out a vehicle that was stuck in the snow in Brooklyn.

Several videos went viral on social media on Sunday showing Mamdani clearing snow to dig out a vehicle that was stuck along the roadside on Myrtle Avenue and Franklin Avenue. In another clip, he was seen assisting a car in a nearby parking lot close to Throop Avenue and Myrtle Avenue.

Replying to one of the videos, Mamdani said, “As I have said, there is no task too big or no job too small. Happy to lend a hand and help out New Yorkers. Stay safe!"

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also replied to the video. “Thanks for helping out our neighbours, but put on a hat!" she wrote.

“Credit where due, looks like @NYCMayor is handling this storm very well so far," Benny Polatseck, an aide to former Mayor Eric Adams and a vocal critic of Mamdani, posted on X on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the snowstorm during the weekend, the Mayor refused to shut schools and instead announced that virtual classes would be held on Monday.

“If you do see me, feel free to throw a snowball at me," the mayor joked to students during a news conference Sunday afternoon.

According to New York Times, seven people were found dead outside over the weekend, including one homeless person on a park bench in Queens. Local state senator Jessica Ramos said that the man had frozen to death. It was not clear if the other deaths were weather-related.

Department of Sanitation spokesman Joshua Goodman said streets were salted and ploughed and bike lanes were cleared for delivery workers throughout the day on Sunday.

Later, Mamdani thanked the workers and said, “Thank you to all of the city workers who have been working around the clock this weekend to keep us safe. No job is too small, no storm is too big."

“There are areas where emergency response has been stretched and needs to improve, and the Council will be closely engaged in addressing those gaps," City Council speaker Julie Menin said in a statement.

“But the scale of the effort today reflects how seriously our essential workers take public safety, and the crews on the ground deserve real credit and gratitude from the millions of New Yorkers who rely on them," she added.
