Claude-maker Anthropic announced on Friday that it had suspended access to two powerful AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after the Trump administration sought to block foreign access over national security concerns.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday sent a letter to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, saying the Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models would be subject to export controls to any location outside of the US and to all foreign persons within the country.
Why Did US Block Foreign Access?
An administration official told Axios that the department decided to take action after another company claimed it could jailbreak Mythos, prompting alarms over possible national security risks. The administration tried to get Anthropic to pause releasing the latest models but was unsuccessful, which resulted in export controls, as per the official.
The official said the AI models need to remain locked down until the US government’s national security apparatus was bolstered enough to ward off threats, which could take a few weeks.

What Did US Say?
According to the Commerce Department’s letter, a license will be required for the export, re-export or domestic transfer of Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models.
Furthermore, Anthropic will have to submit an additional application for individually validated licenses. Any failure to comply would result in financial and civil penalties.
What Was Anthropic’s Response?
Anthropic acknowledged receiving the government directive and said it had suspended access to the two AI models for all consumers to ensure compliance.
The firm said that the letter did not state what specifically concerned the government. However, the firm’s “understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or ‘jailbreaking'" the Fable 5 model such that it could aid hacking.
Fable 5, released on Thursday, is a restricted AI model that sparked concerns about having unprecedented abilities to identify software vulnerabilities. Mythos 5 has only been released to select companies.
Despite US concerns over jailbreaking, Anthropic said none of its security testers had found a “universal jailbreak," or a way to bypass it’s safeguards against helping hackers.
Anthropic has been locked in a legal standoff with the Trump administration for refusing to allow its technology to potentially be used for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, leading the Pentagon to cut contracts with the company.
