At Indian Embassy Event, US Lawmaker Rips Into Pakistan Over Terrorism: 'Must Clamp Down On LeT'

A senior US lawmaker has urged Pakistan to take decisive action against terror groups operating from its soil, calling out organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba during an event hosted by the Indian Embassy in Washington to mark the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack.

The exhibition, titled “The Human Cost of Terrorism", was organised by the Indian Embassy in the United States at Capitol Hill and drew bipartisan participation from American lawmakers.

Nineteen members of Congress and around 60 congressional staffers attended, while a survivor of the 9/11 attacks and a Pentagon first responder joined the programme virtually.

Addressing the gathering, Brad Sherman, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, recalled the victims of the Pahalgam attack and linked the assault to Pakistan-based terror networks.

He said the attackers, identified as The Resistance Front, deliberately targeted civilians and allegedly separated victims based on religion.

“The group is widely believed to be an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which continues to find safe haven in Pakistan," Sherman said.

“This moment should be used to press the Pakistani government to crack down not just on Lashkar-e-Taiba, but also on Jaish-e-Mohammed and other terrorist organisations."

The exhibition comes at a time when Pakistan has been projecting itself internationally as a peacemaker, including attempts to position itself as a mediator amid the recent US-Iran conflict.

Against that backdrop, speakers at the event underscored what they described as the contradiction between Islamabad’s diplomatic messaging and the continued presence of extremist groups within its borders.

Lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties attended the event, including members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, co-chairs of the India Caucus, and US senators.

The exhibition featured digital panels documenting major terror attacks across the world, such as the 1993 and 2008 Mumbai attacks and the Pahalgam attack, along with details of the terror outfits and individuals allegedly responsible.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, said the exhibition was meant to serve as a stark reminder of the global threat posed by terrorism.

“The scourge of terror continues to challenge societies everywhere," he told reporters. “Countries must stand united and resolute in confronting and defeating terrorism."

Kwatra added that India’s position on the issue has been unambiguous, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently reiterated the country’s determination to act firmly against terrorism in all its forms.
