Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday has been officially charged with crimes against humanity, following a government-led investigation into last year’s deadly student protests. Two other senior officials also face similar charges linked to the violent suppression of the movement.

The charges relate to the 2024 student-led uprising, during which dozens were killed and many injured. Prosecutors allege that Hasina personally gave the order for security forces and political allies to carry out forceful operations against demonstrators. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said the violence was not spontaneous, but “planned and coordinated."

The case is supported by video footage and encrypted messages exchanged between various state agencies, which prosecutors claim show deliberate intent to crush the protests.
