The capture of Beaufort Castle by Israeli forces has emerged as one of the most significant developments in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, marking Israel’s deepest military advance into southern Lebanon in more than 26 years.

Perched atop a commanding hill near the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, Beaufort Castle — known locally as Qalaat al-Shaqif or the “Castle of the High Rock" — is a medieval fortress that has played a crucial military role for centuries due to its strategic location. The fortress overlooks vast stretches of southern Lebanon, the Litani River valley and parts of northern Israel, making it one of the most important high-ground positions in the region.

Originally built by Crusaders in the 12th century, the castle has changed hands multiple times throughout history, passing through Crusader, Muslim, Mamluk and Ottoman control. Historians say its hilltop location made it a natural military stronghold long before the fortress itself was constructed.

In modern times, Beaufort Castle became deeply intertwined with the Arab-Israeli conflict. During the Lebanese Civil War, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) used the fortress as a military position from which rockets and artillery attacks were launched toward northern Israel. The site became a major target for Israeli forces and was captured by the Israeli military during the 1982 Lebanon War after intense fighting in what became known as the Battle of the Beaufort.

Israel subsequently transformed the area into a major military outpost and maintained control over the castle and surrounding ridge throughout its occupation of southern Lebanon from 1982 until its withdrawal in 2000. During that period, the fortress became a symbol of Israel’s prolonged military presence in Lebanon and was frequently targeted by Hezbollah attacks.

The castle’s strategic value lies in its elevation. Situated around 700 metres above sea level, it offers sweeping views over southern Lebanon and key border regions. Military analysts say whoever controls Beaufort Castle gains a significant surveillance and artillery advantage, allowing forces to monitor troop movements and activity across a wide area.

Israeli forces recaptured the fortress and the surrounding Beaufort Ridge after days of intense fighting and airstrikes against Hezbollah positions. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation, describing it as part of a broader effort to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. Images released by Israeli authorities showed troops raising Israeli flags at the site.

The seizure of Beaufort Castle is being viewed as both a symbolic and military victory for Israel. Beyond its historical significance, the fortress occupies one of the most dominant geographical positions in southern Lebanon, making it a key objective in any military campaign in the region.

The latest operation has also raised concerns about the future of the historic landmark. Beaufort Castle is one of Lebanon’s most important medieval heritage sites and is among the cultural locations that received enhanced protection status from UNESCO due to the ongoing conflict.

With fighting continuing across southern Lebanon, the fortress once again finds itself at the center of a conflict that has shaped its history for decades.
