Bill Maher issued a stern warning to Republicans with an explicit metaphor on Friday.
“You’re way past flirting with authoritarianism,” the “Real Time” host said. “Flirting? Let’s be real. You’re fucking it.”

“You must know we are really on the edge of a dictatorship here, and you’re the only ones who can stop it,” Maher said. “Do you really want to make this a fundamentally different country than the one you claim to love?”
He referenced a slew of recent news items, including the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show, Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns, lawsuits against newspapers and President Donald Trump’s face appearing on huge banners adorning federal buildings ― the latter eliciting some nervous laughter from the audience.
The show aired the day after the Trump administration indicted former FBI Director James Comey, accusing him of lying in congressional testimony in 2020. In his opening monologue, Maher directly referenced the indictment.
“If you are tracking the rise of autocracy … we’re past the muzzling dissident phase and we’re into the prosecuting political enemies phase,” he said. “I think uh, Trump could be in the general’s uniform by Christmas.”
