An explosion at a crowded market in northwestern Pakistan killed at least nine people and injured dozens on Tuesday, according to emergency officials, as quoted by Reuters. The blast took place at Naurang Bazar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a busy market area that forms part of the town square.
The explosion triggered panic in the area as people rushed to help the injured while emergency teams arrived at the site. Visuals from the scene showed damaged shops and a badly wrecked vehicle following the blast.
Emergency response agency Rescue 1122 said around 30 people were wounded in the attack. Several of those injured were shifted to hospitals in the nearby district of Bannu for treatment.
Hospitals receive dozens of injured
Mohammad Ishaq, medical superintendent of THQ Hospital, said the hospital had received 37 patients after the explosion. He added that some of the injured were in critical condition.
Emergency workers continued rescue operations in the area after the blast, while security officials began examining the site.
The attack has once again raised concerns over the worsening security situation in the region.
Second major attack in recent days
The market bombing comes only days after another deadly attack in nearby Bannu district on Saturday.
In that incident, a car bombing followed by an ambush at a police post killed 15 police officers. Pakistani authorities later blamed militants based in neighbouring Afghanistan for the attack.
Following the incident, Islamabad lodged a strong protest with the Taliban-led government in Kabul.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan
The Afghan Taliban government said on Monday that it had no immediate comment regarding Pakistan’s allegations.
Relations between the two countries have remained tense in recent months. In February, Pakistan and Afghanistan witnessed some of their worst fighting in years after Islamabad carried out airstrikes inside Afghanistan.
Pakistan said the strikes targeted militant hideouts allegedly used to organise attacks against Pakistan.
However, the Taliban government denied sheltering militants and maintained that militancy inside Pakistan was an internal matter for Islamabad.
The latest market blast has added to fears that tensions between the two neighbouring countries could worsen further.
Security concerns have continued to grow in northwestern Pakistan, particularly in areas close to the Afghan border, where militant attacks have increased in recent months.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into Tuesday’s explosion while hospitals remain on alert to treat those injured in the attack.
