Police investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC News “Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie, have confirmed that blood found outside her home belongs to her.
The discovery has deepened concern in a case that has gripped the United States, even as authorities say they believe she is still alive. Nancy is believed to have been kidnapped from her home in Tucson, Arizona, late on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said initial DNA tests confirmed that droplets of blood found on her doorstep belonged to her. He, however, added that, four days after her disappearance, detectives were still no closer to identifying those responsible for the abduction.
“Everybody’s still a suspect in our eyes,," Nanos told reporters, adding that police want her returned home safely. He said authorities believe she is still alive.
The case has drawn intense national attention, with dozens of media crews descending on the quiet neighbourhood where Guthrie lives.
US President Donald Trump has ordered all federal law enforcement agencies to assist local authorities. His press spokeswoman said Trump had spoken directly with Savannah Guthrie and assured her that the federal government was fully involved.
Family Renews Plea
Following the police update, Guthrie’s family renewed its plea to the kidnappers.
In a video posted on Instagram, her son Camron Guthrie said the family had received no direct contact. “Whoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you," he said.
“We haven’t heard anything directly. We need you to reach out and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward. But first we have to know that you have our mom," Camron added.

NBC news anchor Savannah Guthrie had earlier made an emotional appeal, asking for proof that her mother is alive.
The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to her rescue or the arrest of those responsible. Officials said a ransom note was received, and one person has been arrested over a fake ransom demand.
Meanwhile, Nanos warned that time is critical, as Nancy Guthrie needs daily medication. “It’s day four or five, and we don’t know that she’s getting her medication," Nanos said. “That could, in itself, prove fatal."
