BNP chief Tarique Rahman met with Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman and National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Nahid Islam on Sunday, marking what he described as a “positive political beginning." This meeting occurred just two days before Tarique Rahman’s party is set to form the next government in Bangladesh.
In the recent elections, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, secured a significant victory with a two-thirds majority, receiving 49.97 per cent of the votes and winning 209 seats. The election results were announced on Friday.
Tarique Rahman visited the residence of Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman, accompanied by BNP’s secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Following the visit, Shafiqur Rahman shared the picture of the meeting on X.

The Jamaat-e-Islami, a party historically opposed to Bangladesh’s 1971 independence from Pakistan, achieved its best-ever performance, garnering 31.76 per cent of the votes and securing 68 seats. The National Citizen Party (NCP) obtained six seats with 3.05 per cent of the votes, making it the third-highest party in terms of seat numbers.
Congratulating the BNP chief “on his election as the incoming Prime Minister of Bangladesh," the Jamaat said his visit to Shafiqur Rahman’s residential office “marks an important moment in our national political journey." Stating that the Jamaat welcomes “this engagement in a spirit of dialogue and responsibility," the party said in a post on X that it hopes it signals “a new chapter of institutional maturity and mutual respect."
The party reiterated its commitment to establishing a prosperous, stable, and modern state rooted in democratic values and constitutional governance.
“In our discussions, he (Tarique Rahman) reaffirmed that steps are being taken regarding incidents of post-election violence, including actions to address harm against opposition supporters and minority communities," the post added.
The BNP leader Tarique Rahman also met Jamaat-ally National Citizen Party’s (NCP) convenor Nahid Islam later.
The NCP, which was formed in February last year with support from Interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, emerged from the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) movement, which played a significant role in the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government in August 2024. In December, the NCP joined forces with an offshoot of Jamaat-e-Islami to form the pressure group ‘Gonotantrik Songshkar Jote’ in preparation for the February elections.
