Thousands of supporters of Nepal’s former king gathered outside Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday to welcome him back and renew calls for the restoration of the monarchy.

Former King Gyanendra Shah was seen waving to cheering crowds through the sunroof of his vehicle as police in riot gear worked to manage the large gathering at the airport’s main entrance. Protesters chanted slogans such as “Bring back the king" and “Restore constitutional monarchy," expressing loyalty to the former monarch.

Supporters also lined the roads along his route to his private residence in the capital. The demonstration remained peaceful, and authorities reported no arrests.

Gyanendra was returning from a visit to eastern Nepal. The public show of support comes nearly two decades after massive street protests in 2006 forced him to relinquish direct rule. In 2008, Nepal’s parliament formally abolished the centuries-old monarchy, transforming the country into a republic. Gyanendra subsequently vacated the Royal Palace and has since lived as a private citizen.

Similar pro-monarchy rallies have been held in recent years. An estimated 10,000 supporters gathered at the airport last year, while another rally turned violent, resulting in two deaths and several injuries.

The former king has not publicly commented on the renewed calls for reinstating the monarchy. Despite visible support from loyalist groups, analysts believe his immediate return to power remains unlikely, as mainstream political parties continue to back the republican system.

The rally comes ahead of crucial parliamentary elections next month. Pro-Gyanendra groups, which secured around 5% of seats in the previous election, are hoping to expand their presence in parliament.
