Three men suspected of spying for China were arrested on Wednesday in the United Kingdom, according to London’s Metropolitan Police.

Authorities said the men are accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service in violation of the UK’s National Security Act of 2023. Police have not publicly identified the suspects because they have not yet been formally charged.

According to officials, one of the suspects is a 39-year-old man arrested in London, while the other two, aged 68 and 43, were detained in Powys and Pontyclun in Wales.

Amid growing speculation about the identity of the suspects, Labour Party MP Joani Reid, who represents the constituency of East Kilbride and Strathaven, confirmed that her husband was among those arrested. Reid said she had no knowledge of any wrongdoing and stressed that she was not involved in her husband’s professional activities.

“I have never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law," she said in a statement, adding that she and her children should not be treated as part of the investigation.

The arrests come amid growing concerns in the UK over alleged espionage and political interference linked to China. The country’s domestic intelligence agency, MI5, previously warned lawmakers that Chinese operatives were attempting to recruit political figures using platforms like LinkedIn and through front organisations.

China has denied such allegations, calling them fabricated and malicious.

UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the government had raised the issue with Chinese officials and warned that Beijing poses multiple security concerns for the country.

Police said there is no indication that the arrests are linked to any immediate threat to the public, but authorities continue to investigate suspected foreign interference targeting the UK’s democratic institutions.
