China conveyed serious security concerns to Pakistan following a fresh wave of terror attacks in Balochistan, seeking foolproof safety guarantees for its personnel and projects, top diplomatic and security sources told CNN-News18.
In response to the deteriorating situation, Beijing has temporarily suspended all ground operations in Gwadar and other parts of Balochistan and evacuated its limited on-ground staff.
According to exclusive inputs, the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, recently met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad to discuss the escalating security challenges in Balochistan.
The meeting focused on the safety of Chinese nationals, rising terrorist activity, bilateral cooperation and the broader regional security environment.
Sources said the Chinese envoy expressed deep concern over the recent terror surge and underlined the need for comprehensive and foolproof security arrangements before any resumption of on-ground activities.
Ishaq Dar, in turn, reassured Beijing of Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening security measures for Chinese interests in the country.
CNN-News18 had earlier reported that China had shut down all ground operations in Gwadar. Highly placed security sources now confirm that Beijing has called off all Chinese ground staff from the region and temporarily halted operations.
The limited number of Chinese personnel, including technicians and engineers stationed in Gwadar, have been evacuated through special flights as a precautionary measure.
While Chinese teams will handle project-related coordination remotely for now, Pakistani supporting staff will continue limited groundwork on Chinese projects in Gwadar, sources said.
The decision follows a recent coordinated attack in Gwadar and other parts of Balochistan, which significantly heightened security risks.
A senior source in the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad said the move is temporary and part of an ongoing review of the overall security situation in Balochistan, particularly in Gwadar.
“All operations are currently suspended. Chinese staff will be re-deployed only after a comprehensive security overhaul and the implementation of enhanced protective measures," the source said.
