Wang Yi urges US-China cooperation at Munich, warns against decoupling, and calls for Europe to join Ukraine peace talks, reflecting Beijing's stance.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing is encouraged by what he described as “signs of respect" from the United States, even as tensions between the two powers persist.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Wang said that while some voices in the US continue to “attack and smear" China, the better path forward would be cooperation between the two governments.
“The best outcome would be for China and the United States to work together," he said, warning against efforts to decouple economies or disrupt supply chains in what he described as a knee-jerk reaction.
Wang stressed that China seeks cooperation rather than confrontation but is prepared to handle potential risks. His remarks come as Beijing looks to stabilise relations with Washington ahead of a possible visit to China by former US President Donald Trump later this spring.
A veteran diplomat and a key figure in President Xi Jinping’s foreign policy strategy for over a decade, Wang has been central to shaping China’s international messaging during a period of heightened geopolitical rivalry.
On the Ukraine conflict, Wang reiterated Beijing’s stance that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and negotiation. He said China is actively promoting peace talks and called for broader participation in the process.
“Europe should not watch the process from the sidelines," Wang said, adding that the continent has every right to be involved in discussions over Ukraine’s future. “Europe needs to be at the table – not on the menu."
His comments reflect China’s broader effort to position itself as a proponent of diplomatic solutions while navigating complex relations with both the US and Europe.
