A six-member delegation from the International Liaison Department of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC), led by Vice Minister Sun Haiyan, visited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) head office in New Delhi on Monday and held talks on advancing party-to-party ties.

Dr Vijay Chauthaiwale, the party’s Foreign Affairs Department in-charge, said the Chinese delegation met BJP officials, including BJP General Secretary Arun Singh, and discussed the means to advance inter-party ties between the BJP and CPC.

“Ms Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister, International Dept of Communist Party of China (IDCPC) visited today BJP head Office. During the meeting we discussed how to enhance communication and interaction between BJP and CPC," said Arun Singh on X.

Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong was also part of the Chinese delegation. This was the first round of party-to-party talks held between India and China since the two countries saw a thaw in ties after tensions surrounding the Galwan Valley clash in 2020.

In the past, there have been party-level meetings between the BJP and the CPC, dating back to the late 2000s. Several BJP delegations have also gone to Beijing to hold talks with top Chinese government leaders.

The IDCPC, founded in 1951 under the direct leadership of the CPC Central Committee, is tasked with the party’s external relations. It has conducted international exchanges centred on the key tasks of the party in various periods. Through high-level exchanges, forums, dialogues, and mutual visits, the IDCPC has carried out party-to-party exchanges in several countries.

Relations between India and China have witnessed a thaw after the deadly Galwan clash in 2020. Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit held in Kazan in October 2024, where they agreed on measures to maintain peace and tranquility along the border, and strengthen mechanisms for diplomatic and military negotiations.

India and China also agreed to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, stopped since 2020 due to border tensions, and also announced the resumption of direct flights between the two nations. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently vowed to maintain good relations with India, highlighting what he described as a “positive momentum" in China-India ties.
