A $240-million US surveillance drone, worth more than two F-35 fighter jets, vanished over the Persian Gulf.
The US Navy has confirmed the loss of an MQ-4C Triton surveillance drone, one of the most expensive unmanned aircraft in the American military’s arsenal, during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The MQ-4C Triton is valued at over $200 million per aircraft, approximately twice the price of two Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, making it among the most expensive unmanned platforms in the US military inventory.
According to the United States Naval Safety Command, an MQ-4C Triton crashed on April 9, with no injury to personnel. According to the mishap summary, the high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned surveillance aircraft crashed in the Persian Gulf. However, it did not specify the exact location of the crash as it was withheld for operational security reasons.
The incident has been classified as a “Class A" mishap, a category used when damage exceeds $2.5 million or an aircraft is destroyed. The reconnaissance aircraft involved in the latest incident is worth around $240–250 million, according to US-based CBS News.
What’s The Incident?
The MQ-4C drone disappeared over the Strait of Hormuz on April 9 after declaring an in-flight emergency, raising immediate questions about whether it crashed or was shot down.
The aircraft had been flying a mission over the Persian Gulf when it suddenly descended and disappeared from flight-tracking sites last week.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the drone transmitting a code 7700 general emergency signal before taking a slight turn toward Iran and beginning a rapid descent. It then vanished from tracking screens entirely.
What Is MQ-4C Triton?
The MQ-4C Triton is among the US Navy’s most sophisticated unmanned surveillance platforms, capable of long-endurance missions and wide-area maritime reconnaissance.
Designed for persistent, large-scale maritime surveillance, it operates at altitudes above 50,000 feet for more than 24 hours at a stretch, with a range of 7,400 nautical miles which gives it the ability to monitor vast stretches of ocean continuously without refuelling.
According to its maker, Northrop Grumman, it is equipped with a 360-degree multi-intelligence sensor suite, enabling wide-area surveillance and rapid threat detection. The platform can relay real-time data to other military assets, facilitating coordinated, multi-domain operations. It delivers up to four times the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) coverage of other autonomous systems while maintaining high altitude and endurance.
It functions as a high-altitude, long-endurance autonomous platform, frequently serving as the aerial eye for manned P-8A Poseidon patrol planes operating at lower altitudes beneath it.
As of 2025, the US Navy operated 20 Triton drones, with plans to acquire seven more.
