Greece is set to impose a ban on social media for children under the age of 15 from January 1, 2027, said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, citing threats of online addiction, disturbed sleeping patterns, and surging anxiety among teens.

In a video message posted on TikTok, PM Mitsotakis termed the decision “difficult but necessary". “We have decided to go ahead with a difficult but necessary measure: ban access to social media for children under 15 years old".

The Prime Minister underlined that children, especially teens, face growing pressure from constant comparison and social media comments.

Citing his discussions with parents, Mitsotakis flagged internet addiction among children, adding excessive screen time caused anxiety among them.

Over the past few months, several countries have announced plans to ban access to social media for children and teens.

Australia became the first country to introduce such measures, establishing a benchmark that other nations are now observing with keen interest.
