US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he does not expect to need China’s help in ending the war with Iran and ease Tehran’s hold on the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump on Tuesday left for Beijing to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, his first visit in nearly 10 years.
Before departing from Washington, Reuters reported the President playing down the role China could have in resolving the conflict, in which both sides have blocked maritime traffic through a waterway that normally carries one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies.

“I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise," he said.
While the ceasefire continues to hold, both US and Iran are yet to come at a point of agreement. While Washington has demanded Tehran to scrap its nuclear programme and lift its chokehold on Strait of Hormuz, Iran wants compensation for war damage, end to the US blockade and stopping of fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon. Iran’s demands have been rejected by Trump, who called it “garbage".
Trump is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday, with formal talks with Xi set for Thursday and Friday. The packed itinerary is expected to include a state banquet and a tea reception.
Trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies are expected to dominate discussions. Issues related to Taiwan, China’s rare earth export controls and broader economic ties are also likely to feature prominently during the meetings.
The visit comes amid continued friction between Washington and Beijing over strategic and geopolitical issues. AFP journalists reported heightened security measures in Beijing ahead of Trump’s arrival, with police monitoring key intersections and checking identification cards at metro stations.
Trump is being accompanied in China by a large group of top US business executives, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple’s Tim Cook, the White House has said.
