Shanghai On Alert: Over 280,000 were evacuated, disrupting transportation.
China’s financial capital Shanghai faced a rare dual threat as Tropical Storm Co-May made landfall while authorities simultaneously issued tsunami warnings following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s far east. The combination of gale-force winds, torrential rain and potential surges from distant seismic activity prompted the evacuation of more than 280,000 people, widespread transportation shutdowns and heightened emergency preparedness.
Co-May Hits Shanghai
Tropical Storm Co-May first made landfall in the port city of Zhoushan in Zhejiang province early Wednesday, with winds reaching 23 meters per second (83 kph). Hours later, the storm reached Shanghai bringing with it a deluge that municipal officials warned could amount to 100 mm of rainfall within six hours- roughly a full month’s worth.
Shanghai halted all ferry services, grounded at least 640 flights- including over 400 at Pudong International Airport- and imposed speed restrictions on highways and rail services across the Yangtze River delta. Parks and the city zoo were shut down, though Disneyland and Legoland remained open, with selected attractions temporarily suspended due to safety concerns.
Tsunami Warning In Shanghai
A powerful undersea earthquake in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggered tsunami alerts that reached as far south as China’s east coast. Initial forecasts from the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center warned of “disastrous impacts" in some coastal areas. While tsunami warnings for Shanghai and Zhoushan were later lifted, coastal water levels were expected to rise by up to 180 cm in surrounding areas, according to state media. Shanghai’s marine forecasting center said tidal activity within the city was not expected to exceed danger thresholds.
Authorities urged residents to remain indoors, avoid waterfront areas and stay updated via official channels as conditions continue to evolve. While the immediate tsunami threat appears to have passed, emergency teams remain on alert, monitoring both the storm’s progression and any residual impact from the seismic activity.
