According to Khaleej Times, the motorcyclist, Avinash Sequeira, remains hospitalised at Fakeeh University Hospital after undergoing two major surgeries, with further procedures expected in the coming days.
His family said Avinash had gone with his routine Sunday group of fix fellow bikers riding towards Hatta on Sunday before sunrise. He had borrowed a friend’s bike as his own vehicle was undergoing repairs.
While returning, one of the riders had noticed a leak in the radiator of a bike. They later decided to exchange motorcycles so the damaged bike could be taken to a nearby garage, while Avinash continued home on another bike, the family said.
“All was fine until then," Khaleej Times quoted Avinash saying from his hospital bed.
“I wasn’t speeding — my speed wouldn’t have been more than 50kmph on the curve," he said. “The bike slipped unexpectedly. I tried to steady it because I didn’t want it to crash, but it was too heavy. Once I lost control, it fell on my legs."
The crash left Avinash with multiple fractures to both legs and his right hip. He is currently under treatment at Fakeeh University Hospital.
According to Khaleej Times, he has so far undergone surgeries lasting nearly five hours, during which steel rods were inserted to stabilise fractures in his right femur and hip area. He will undergo two more surgeries, including procedures on his left leg and reconstruction of the tibia below his right knee, the family said.
Meanwhile, Khaleej Times quoted the victim’s father Sunil Sequeira, a real estate broker, saying the family has no means to meet the escalating medical expenses.
“We were alerted after Avinash’s iPhone automatically sent out an SOS alert following the crash," Sunil said. “By the time we reached the hospital, he was already being prepared for surgery."
The doctors have indicated that Avinash faces a long recovery, including around three months of rehabilitation before he can begin walking again, followed by several more months to regain full strength.
The family said they have received support received from friends, fellow bikers, and the wider community.
