Early results from Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliament elections showed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) securing a majority in the 299-seat parliament, according to unofficial tallies compiled by Bangladeshi media outlets.
As counting progressed on Friday morning, the BNP was leading or had won 151 seats, crossing the 150-seat mark required for an absolute majority. Initial trends shared by BDNews24 suggested Jamaat-e-Islami would emerge as the main opposition, securing 43 seats.
Unofficial tallies compiled by local media indicated the BNP had won 158 seats, Jamaat 41 and others five, with counting completed in over 200 constituencies. The Election Commission has yet to officially confirm the final consolidated results.
The high-stakes election, held alongside a referendum on the 84-point July National Charter reform package, marked the first general poll since the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.
