The French authorities has summoned billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk to appear before them in April for answering questions related to a cyber-crime investigation into his social media platform, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday.

The offices of X were raided on Tuesday by the cyber-crime unit as part of an investigation that started in January 2025 following complaints about X’s algorithm and the content it recommended.

The prosecutor’s said on Tuesday said the probe has been widened following complaints over the site’s AI chatbot, Grok.

According to The Independent, the investigators will look into creation of images of a child pornographic nature and the violation of a person’s image rights with sexually explicit deepfakes, along with other potential crimes.

“At this stage, the conduct of this investigation is part of a constructive approach, with the aim of ultimately ensuring that the X platform complies with French laws, insofar as it operates on national territory," the prosecutor’s office said, adding that the police’s National Cyber Unit along with Europol are involved in the investigation.

BBC quoted the prosecutor’s office saying that both Musk and former X chief executive officer Linda Yaccarino had been summoned to appear at hearings in April as part of its probe.

Last year in July, X claimed the investigation “egregiously undermines X’s fundamental right to due process and threatens our users’ rights to privacy and free speech".

It also claimed there were “serious concerns about the impartiality, fairness, and political motivations of the investigation".

“X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech," it added. “For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities’ demands, as we have a legal right to do."

In January, Musk rejected allegations that his artificial intelligence system Grok generates illegal images of minors, even as countries moved to restrict access to the tool over concerns about obscene content.
