Since 1949, NATO has been a security alliance of 32 countries, aiming to protect members' freedom through political and military unity.

Tensions rise between Trump and German Chancellor Merz over Iran.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that European countries have understood the message from the United States about their military contributions, according to Al Jazeera. He said that allies are now making sure that agreements about using military bases are being followed across Europe. These comments come after US President Donald Trump accused some NATO members of not supporting Washington enough during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Speaking at a European Political Community summit in Armenia, Rutte admitted there had been some tension between the US and Europe, but now European leaders are taking Washington’s concerns seriously. “Yes, there has been some disappointment from the US side, but Europeans have listened," Rutte told reporters, as reported by Al Jazeera.
This pressure has led to a change in attitude in key European countries, especially in Germany, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently said that the United States is Germany’s “most important partner in the North Atlantic Alliance."
This comes just days after he criticised Trump’s handling of the conflict in West Asia. The Chancellor’s comments come as the White House plans to reduce its military presence in Europe. Trump recently announced plans to cut the US military presence in Germany by much more than the 5,000 troops previously planned for withdrawal.
Trying to find common ground, Merz posted on X that both countries “share a common goal: Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons." This is different from his earlier position in April, when he said the Trump administration was being outplayed in talks to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the personal and political disagreement between the two leaders seems to be growing. Trump recently responded to Merz’s criticism during an executive order signing in the Oval Office, saying the “German chancellor is doing a terrible job" and suggesting he should focus on issues like immigration and energy.
Trump said he asked Merz about the Iranian nuclear threat, “Would you like Iran to have a nuclear weapon?" When Merz said no, Trump replied, “Well then, I guess I’m right." Trump also posted on Truth Social, telling Merz to focus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and stop interfering with efforts to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
While these public disagreements continue, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned on Saturday about the stability of the alliance. Tusk said the “greatest danger" facing NATO now comes from “internal divisions" rather than outside threats. He urged partners to work together to stop what he called a “disastrous trend" of division.
