US President Donald Trump sharply criticised a clean energy partnership between Gavin Newsom and the United Kingdom, calling the California governor a “loser" whose work “turns to garbage" as Britain moves to deepen cooperation with the US state on climate and clean technology.
In an interview with Politico, Trump warned British leaders that “the UK’s got enough trouble without getting involved with Gavin Newscum," using a derogatory nickname he reserves for Newsom, and called it “inappropriate" for the UK to strike such agreements with him.
What UK Said On Deal With California
The comments came after Newsom and Britain’s energy secretary signed a memorandum of understanding in London aimed at strengthening ties between the UK and California on clean energy investment, technology sharing and climate resilience. The pact is intended to open new opportunities for British companies in the Californian market and accelerate joint action on offshore wind and other low-carbon technologies.

The UK described the deal as a vehicle for boosting transatlantic cooperation on climate goals, creating jobs and expanding innovation across sectors such as renewable energy and biodiversity protection. A UK government statement said the agreement would help “cut energy bills, create jobs and tackle the climate crisis" and strengthen ties between British and Californian researchers and businesses.
What Newsom Said On Trump Remarks
Newsom, a potential contender for the US Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, has used his European visit to promote climate action and meet international leaders. A Newsom spokesperson responded to Trump’s remarks by accusing his administration of favouring “polluting" industries and ignoring global cooperation on climate solutions, affirming that California will continue its environmental commitments independent of federal positions.
In London, after attending the Munich Security Conference, Newsom said, “Donald Trump’s administration is temporary. California’s commitment is not."
The California governor also met Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez who joined Latin American countries in condemning the recent US military intervention in Venezuela and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz who criticised Trump’s reorientation of US foreign policy during an appearance in Munich.
