An image circulating widely on social media purportedly shows the body of the suspected shooter involved in the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner scare.
The claims, however, remain unverified, with authorities yet to confirm the authenticity or the identity of the individual depicted.
The image began spreading shortly after reports emerged of a shooting incident outside the Washington Hilton, where US President Donald Trump and several top officials had gathered for the annual dinner.
While users online claim that the photograph shows the 30-year-old assailant neutralised, no law enforcement agency has confirmed whether the suspect in custody matches the person seen in the viral visuals.
Officials have so far only stated that a shooter was apprehended, without releasing further identifying details.
SHOOTING OUTSIDE VENUE TRIGGERS PANIC INSIDE BALLROOM
According to The Associated Press (AP), the incident unfolded outside the ballroom where hundreds of guests were seated.
Chaos erupted inside as attendees reported hearing what sounded like multiple gunshots.
Guests ducked under tables while security personnel rushed in.
“Out of the way, sir!" one person yelled, while others shouted for people to take cover. Audible gasps and confusion spread across the hall as the situation developed in real time.
The United States Secret Service quickly secured the premises and evacuated all protected officials.
TRUMP, CABINET MEMBERS SAFE AFTER EVACUATION
Reuters reported that Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump, was rushed out of the venue by Secret Service agents after initially taking cover behind the dais.
Vice President JD Vance and other Cabinet members were also escorted to safety.
Trump later confirmed on Truth Social that a “shooter had been apprehended," adding that all key officials were “in perfect condition."
He also praised law enforcement, saying they had done a “fantastic job."
SHOTS FIRED AT SECURITY PERSONNEL, AGENT PROTECTED BY VEST
As per Reuters, the suspect, reportedly armed with a shotgun, fired at a Secret Service agent near a screening area.
The agent was hit in a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to be unharmed.
AP also cited a law enforcement official confirming that a shooter had opened fire, though details about the sequence of events remain limited as investigations continue.
Heavy security deployment followed the incident, with National Guard personnel entering the premises and helicopters circling overhead.
EVENT SCRAPPED AMID ONGOING INVESTIGATION
The high-profile dinner, attended by journalists, celebrities and senior government officials, was ultimately called off.
Organisers began dismantling the venue shortly after the evacuation.
“We will do this again," said White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang, according to AP.
