“The Chancellor of Germany should spend more time on ending the war with Russia/Ukraine (Where he has been totally ineffective!), and fixing his broken Country", said U.S. President Donald Trump, as he called on Friedrich Merz to focus on his domestic challenges.
The remarks followed Merz’s critical comments on Washington’s approach to the war in Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump suggested the German leadership prioritise ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“The Chancellor of Germany should spend more time on ending the war with Russia/Ukraine (Where he has been totally ineffective!), and fixing his broken Country, especially Immigration and Energy, and less time on interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran Nuclear threat, thereby making the World, including Germany, a safer place!" said the U.S. President.
War Of Words Over Iran
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had criticised Washington’s handling of the war in Iran, stating an entire nation is being humiliated.
“And then letting the Americans travel to Islamabad, only to send them back without any results. An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by these so-called Revolutionary Guards," Merz had said.
On Tuesday, Trump responded by saying that Merz “thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon."
“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!" he wrote on Truth Social, adding, “If Iran had a Nuclear Weapon, the whole World would be held hostage. I am doing something with Iran, right now, that other Nations, or Presidents, should have done long ago."
Merz Downplays Rift
The German Chancellor maintained his personal relationship with Trump remains stable despite the recent exchange of barbs.
“My personal relationship with the US President remains good. I simply had doubts from the start about what was begun with the war in Iran. That is why I have made that clear," Merz told reporters.
The dispute also comes after Trump announced a review of the U.S. military presence in Germany — a country that hosts several key American military installations and remains a central NATO ally in Europe.
Any potential reduction in U.S. troop deployment has sparked concerns among the allies about the future structure of NATO. The presence of U.S. troops in Germany has long been a part of NATO’s broader defence framework.
