For a moment this week, the world stood at the precipice of a full-scale regional war. Following a 38-day conflict, both Washington and Tehran appeared to have reached a terminal impasse. On Monday, US President Donald Trump issued a profanity-laced ultimatum, threatening to bomb Iran’s energy infrastructure unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened by Wednesday. Tehran responded with equal defiance, refusing to budge until Israel halted its bombardment of Lebanon. However, as the deadline loomed, a surprising diplomatic intervention from Beijing may have successfully pulled both sides back from the brink, paving the way for Saturday’s high-stakes summit in Islamabad.

Why did the US-Iran negotiations initially collapse?

The primary cause of the breakdown was a profound lack of trust and conflicting timelines. During earlier indirect talks in Muscat, Oman, the US delegation—led by Vice President JD Vance and Steve Witkoff—expressed deep frustration that Iran’s Supreme Leader was not a direct participant. Washington sought an immediate, comprehensive surrender of Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities in exchange for peace.

Tehran, conversely, viewed the negotiations as a stalling tactic to prevent further American strikes while it sought a “better-than-JCPOA" deal that excluded any discussion of its missile programme. The impasse was further complicated by the US “red line" regarding nuclear facilities and Iran’s refusal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while Lebanon remained under fire. By Tuesday morning, officials on both sides were reportedly preparing for the ceasefire to fail and for hostilities to resume.

How did China intervene to break the diplomatic deadlock?

Observers say the breakthrough occurred when Beijing, Iran’s largest trade partner and a key strategic ally of Pakistan, transitioned from silent observer to active mediator. Recognising that a prolonged war would cripple global energy flows and threaten its Belt and Road investments, China utilised its significant economic leverage over Tehran.

Working behind the scenes with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, Beijing “nudged" the Iranian leadership towards a pragmatic pause. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reportedly held over two dozen high-level calls to coordinate a joint five-point peace initiative with Pakistan. This intervention was so effective that President Trump publicly credited the Chinese leadership, stating he had “great respect" for President Xi Jinping’s role in bringing Tehran back to the table.

What role does Islamabad play in this new peace architecture?

Pakistan has emerged as the essential “neutral ground" for this fragile process. While the US and Iran have found it impossible to speak directly, the involvement of a Muslim-majority neighbour with deep ties to both Beijing and Washington provided the necessary buffer. Islamabad offered a venue where the Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, could negotiate without appearing to capitulate directly to Western pressure.

As JD Vance prepares to lead the American delegation on Saturday, the “Islamabad Accord" stands as a testament to this collaborative diplomacy. While the ceasefire remains incredibly thin, observers say the successful intervention by China has transformed a certain military escalation into a genuine, if difficult, opportunity for a durable regional settlement.
