Donald Trump keeps making headlines, sometimes with his moves, policies, or decisions, and sometimes with his remarks. During his tenure as the American President before, and now, there have been times when Trump has even faced criticism for his remarks.
From telling police officers “don’t be too nice" when arresting suspects to suggesting that injecting disinfectant could combat COVID-19, Trump’s remarks have often drawn backlash.
At one time during his campaign launch, the US President called Mexican immigrants “rapists," a remark that was later massively criticised.
Let’s take a look at five times when Trump made headlines because of his statements:
1. Donald Trump’s ‘S*hole Countries’ Remark
In January 2018, Trump referred to Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations as “shithole countries" during a meeting at the White House with a bipartisan group of senators. The remarks even drew criticism from the UN human rights office, which said that if confirmed true, those remarks were “shocking and shameful" and “racist".
While Trump later denied using the word, he said that he had described those countries as poor and troubled.
2. Donald Trump’s Penis Joke
Trump recently made a rude penis joke on live television in June 2025. After saying he hadn’t yet decided on US military support for Israel, Trump shifted focus to two new 100-foot flagpoles at the White House. “They’re tapered and have a nice top," he said, adding, “the rope goes inside them." As he showed off the poles, he followed with a crude penis joke, leaving many stunned by the sudden turn.
3. Trump Confuses ‘Transgenic’ With ‘Transgender’
During his March 4 State of the Union address, Trump sparked confusion by appearing to mix up the terms ‘transgenic’ and ‘transgender’. Trump, during his address, said that the Biden government had spent USD 8 million “for making mice transgender."
The funding was actually directed toward research involving transgenic mice — genetically altered to help scientists examine how hormone treatments, commonly prescribed to transgender people, affect the body.
4. Trump’s Remarks on Transgender Athletes
On June 18, 2025, Trump spoke to some Juventus players about ‘men playing in women’s sports’ during their visit to the White House. The US president’s question was in reference to transgender athletes.
Trump raised the idea of a woman—seemingly referring to a trans woman—joining their team. He followed it up by repeating his view that only women should compete against other women.
5. Trump’s ‘Go Back’ Remark
On June 14, 2019, Trump faced backlash for his remark on four Democratic congresswomen of colour. He wrote on X that they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came."
It was pointed to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. Critics called his remarks racist.
