The US-born Israeli diplomat, who served in the 1982 Lebanon War, has opened rare backchannel talks with Beirut even as fighting with Hezbollah continues.

Scranton-born Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s ambassador to the United States, took part in the 1982 Lebanon War and is now set to lead peace talks with the same country his army once fought.
“Yechiel Leiter is a talented diplomat, an articulate speaker, and has a deep understanding of American culture and politics. I am convinced he will represent the State of Israel in the best way," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said while announcing his appointment.
Soon after taking charge, Leiter held a rare phone call with his Lebanese counterpart, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, over the weekend. The conversation marked a break from long-standing protocol, as Israel and Lebanon do not have formal diplomatic relations.
Lebanon was drawn into the latest phase of the West Asia conflict after Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel following US-Israeli strikes that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28.
Israel responded with large-scale airstrikes and a ground offensive.
“In the conversation earlier today in Washington between the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to Washington, together with the US ambassador to Lebanon, and under the auspices of the US State Department, Israel agreed to begin formal peace negotiations this coming Tuesday," Leiter said in a statement.
“Israel refused to discuss a ceasefire with the Hezbollah terrorist organisation, which continues to attack Israel and is the main obstacle to peace between the two countries," he added.
Israeli and Lebanese officials are now set to meet in Washington on Tuesday for formal talks aimed at ending the conflict.
However, the proposed talks have drawn opposition within Lebanon. Hezbollah-affiliated lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah said the group rejects direct negotiations with Israel.
Who Is Leiter And What Is His Stance On Gaza, Lebanon
Leiter is a long-time settlement activist who supports Israeli control over the West Bank and expansion of Jewish settlements in the territory.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he shares his hometown with former US president Joe Biden. According to a report by Al Jazeera, Leiter has been associated with far-right political positions.
A historian of philosophy, public policy analyst, and rabbi, Leiter was previously linked to the now-banned Kach party, an ultra-nationalist Jewish group that was barred from contesting elections in the 1990s over allegations of racism.
On Gaza, Leiter has strongly defended Israel’s military campaign. In an interview with PBS in September, he said Israel must “achieve a situation where Gaza will no longer pose a threat to our civilians".
He has repeatedly called for Gaza to be demilitarised and for Hamas to be disarmed. In November 2023, Leiter’s son was killed while fighting in northern Gaza.
Leiter also supports the Abraham Accords, which aim to normalise ties between Israel and Arab nations.
“I’m very upbeat about the potential for an Abraham Accords with Syria and Lebanon," he said in May 2025, according to Al Jazeera, suggesting such agreements could come even before normalisation with Saudi Arabia.
