Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, has dismissed reports claiming the arrest of Indian nationals in Iran amid the ongoing unrest in the contry. In a post on X, he said news circulated by some foreign accounts about developments in Iran was “totally false" and urged people to rely only on reliable sources for information.

The ambassador was responding to a viral X post that alleged Iranian police had arrested “10 Afghan and 6 Indian nationals, along with their Iranian accomplices". He rejected the claim and said misinformation was being spread about the situation in the country.

Protests in Iran

The clarification comes amid rising concern over safety in Iran following protests that began on December 28. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported that hundreds of people have been killed since the protests started. Iran has repeatedly accused foreign media outlets of spreading false reports about events inside the country.

Indian students safe

Meanwhile, the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) said on Sunday that all Indian students studying in Iran are safe. They appealed to families and the public not to panic.

Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, Vice President of AIMSA and the FAIMA Doctors Association, said both groups had received confirmations from Indian students across Iran. He said many students personally contacted the associations to reassure their families about their safety.

“All our students are safe. There is no need to panic," Dr Khan said in a statement.

Dr Khan added that senior officials and the Indian Embassy are closely monitoring developments. He said they remain in constant touch with students and local authorities to ensure their well-being.

AIMSA and FAIMA said they are keeping regular communication channels open and will share updates promptly. They stressed that this was necessary to prevent misinformation and unnecessary anxiety among families in India.
