Economist and public policy scholar Jeffrey Sachs delivered a sharp denunciation of US and Israeli leadership amid the rapidly escalating conflict in Iran and the wider West Asia, calling the war unnecessary, dangerous and driven by what he described as irrational decision-making at the highest levels of government.

Speaking about potential resolutions to the crisis, Jeffrey Sachs told CNN-News18 that the solution was clear and straightforward: “The United States and Israel should go back to their own homes and stop bothering other people, and the war would end. Iran would stop fighting and the war would end. That’s how it should end."

He added, however, that such an outcome seemed unlikely under the current leadership in Washington and Jerusalem.

Jeffrey Sachs accused leaders in both countries of having “lusted for this war against their own publics, against all logic, against all strategic considerations," describing them as “irrational and dangerous people." He singled out US President Donald Trump and Israeli leadership as central figures whose policies, he said, have unnecessarily inflamed tensions with Iran.

The Columbia University professor also criticized the US political system’s handling of the crisis, arguing that constitutional checks and balances are not functioning as intended.

“In the United States, we do not have a constitutional order. We do not have Congress that plays a role," Jeffrey Sachs said, asserting that decision-making is concentrated within the executive branch, particularly the White House and intelligence agencies.

Characterizing the confrontation as “a war of choice that never should have happened," Jeffrey Sachs warned that the consequences of escalation extend far beyond Iran, Israel and the US. He cited the potential risks to global powers and economic blocs, including India, China, European states and the BRICS grouping of emerging economies.

Calling the situation “very dangerous and very unpredictable," Jeffrey Sachs emphasised that the war “makes no sense" strategically and threatens global stability, including that of the United States itself.
