Harmless Action And Costly Slip: How A Sailor’s Workout Disclosed French Aircraft Carrier’s Location

A French naval officer's Strava workout revealed the location of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

Amid the full-blown conflict in West Asia, a French naval officer’s routine workout inadvertently disclosed the location of one of France’s most sensitive military assets.

According to the French daily Le Monde, a young sailor on board the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle kicked off a 36-minute exercise session on the public fitness app Strava — Unaware of the fact that this action would broadcast the vessel’s precise location in the Mediterranean Sea.

The data placed the carrier northwest of Cyprus, around some 100 kilometres from the coast of Turkey. France had declared the carrier’s deployment on March 3, shortly after the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran.

Strava allows its users to share geolocated fitness activities such as runs and cycling routes. In this case, the publicly accessible entry made it possible to track the location of the individual as well as the position of the carrier and its accompanying fleet in near real time.

France Acknowledges Lapse

France’s Armed Forces General Staff acknowledged the lapse, asserting “appropriate measures will be taken by the command".

Speaking to Le Monde, it said posting such activity did not comply with operational digital security rules.

France displayed a lack of interest in US President Donald Trump’s appeal to secure the Strait of Hormuz — a vital maritime chokepoint which accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas trade.

“We are willing to do something to free the Strait of Hormuz, provided that this is not a war situation anymore. Nobody wants to go across the Strait of Hormuz if there’s a risk of missiles or drones going on your head," French Finance Minister Roland Lescure told CNBC.
