Iran’s central military command has rejected US President Donald Trump’s warning to destroy the country’s key infrastructure if it does not agree to a peace deal within 48 hours.
In a statement from the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, General Ali Abdollahi Aliabadi described Trump’s threat as “a helpless, nervous, unbalanced and stupid action".
Using similar religious language, he warned that “the simple meaning of this message is that the gates of hell will open for you".
Trump new ultimatum
Trump had earlier repeated his warning, saying Iran must either reach a deal or reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, he said, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them."
Israel signals possible action
Following Trump’s statement, Israel also stepped up pressure. A senior defence official said Tel Aviv was preparing to target Iranian energy facilities and was waiting for approval from Washington.
The official indicated that such action could take place within the next week. Trump has previously warned that Iranian power plants could be hit if his demands are not met.
Iran keeps door open for talks
Despite its strong response, Iran has not completely ruled out negotiations. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the country remains open in principle to talks with the US through mediation by Pakistan.
However, he did not indicate any willingness to accept Trump’s conditions. He said Iran is focused on securing a “conclusive and lasting end" to what it calls an imposed war.
Iran war impact
The conflict has already led to thousands of deaths and triggered an energy crisis. It has also raised concerns about long-term damage to the global economy.
Iran, in March, shut the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that normally carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.
