The Israeli military said it has launched an “offensive campaign" against Hezbollah after the group fired rockets and projectiles towards Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out precision airstrikes on March 2 in Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon following overnight attacks on northern Israel.

The strikes targeted senior Hezbollah figures. According to reports, Mohammad Raad, head of Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc, was killed during the operation in Beirut.

Senior Hezbollah figure targeted

Mohammad Raad, had served as a Hezbollah member of parliament since 1992. He led the group’s 13-member parliamentary faction and previously acted as spokesperson for former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in Israeli strikes in 2024.

Raad was considered a key political figure within Hezbollah and was elected multiple times from Lebanon’s Baalbek-Hermel district, combining a political role with the group’s militant activities.

The IDF confirmed that it struck “several senior Hezbollah terrorists" and a “central terrorist" but did not officially name Raad.

West Asia conflict

The strikes mark a sharp escalation in clashes between Israel and Hezbollah amid wider tensions involving Iran and Israel, raising concerns that fighting could expand further into Lebanon.

Hezbollah has not officially confirmed Raad’s death but has vowed to continue its resistance.
