Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday suggested she might nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he succeeds in ending the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference after meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Meloni said, “I hope that one day we can award a Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump."
“I trust that if he makes a difference in achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, finally, we too could nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize."
“I trust that if he makes a difference… in achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, for Ukraine too… finally, we too could nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize," the Italian PM added.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration at not having received the prize. In a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, made public earlier this week, the American leader said that failing to win the Nobel Peace Prize meant he no longer felt obliged “to think purely of peace."
Trump recently unveiled his “Board of Peace," a body initially designed to oversee the Gaza truce and the territory’s reconstruction. The initiative, however, has evolved into a broader platform aimed at resolving international conflicts.
Italy has been invited to join the Board, but Meloni said she informed Trump that Italy faces “constitutional problems." Under Italian law, the country cannot participate in an organisation led by a single foreign leader. Trump serves as chairman of the Board, as well as the US representative and the chair of its executive board.
Meloni also urged Trump to adjust the framework to accommodate Italy and other European countries. “We must try to do this work," she said. “The presence of countries like ours can make a difference."
The Board of Peace has drawn international attention, both for its ambitious aims and for the controversial structure, which centres around Trump as its sole foreign leader.
