The U.S. and Israel reportedly pinpointed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s location through a combination of long-term behavioral tracking and a sudden intelligence breakthrough regarding a high-level meeting.
The strike, which The Times of Israel reports as a coordinated effort, reportedly used “bunker buster" munitions to hit several high-security compounds simultaneously, ensuring the elimination of the senior leadership present.
The 5 Key Factors
According to reports from The New York Times and other outlets, the operation relied on various inputs.
1. Long-Term Tracking: The CIA had been monitoring Khamenei’s movements and security patterns for months. This allowed intelligence agencies to gain “high fidelity" on his habits and likely locations.
2. The “Turning Point": Intelligence officials learned that a rare, high-level meeting involving Khamenei and senior political and military leaders would take place on the morning of Saturday, February 28, 2026.
3. Sophisticated Tracking Systems: U.S. President Donald Trump stated that “Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems" were used to monitor Khamenei’s whereabouts, ensuring he could not evade detection once the target was identified.
4. Intelligence Sharing: The CIA shared this “high fidelity" intelligence with Israel. This led both countries to move the planned strike from nighttime to broad daylight (approximately 9:40 a.m. Tehran time) to exploit the specific window when all targets were gathered at a leadership compound in central Tehran.
5. Target Identification: Intelligence officers identified three simultaneous meetings taking place in the offices of the Iranian presidency, the Supreme Leader, and the National Security Council.
Heavy and pinpoint bombing to continue: Donald Trump
Khamenei was killed in a major attack on Iran launched by Israel and the United States, throwing the future ofthe Islamic Republic into doubt and raising the risk of regional instability. Iranian state television and the state-run IRNA news agency announced the 86-year-old’s death early Sunday.
U.S. President Donald Trump said it gave Iranians their “greatest chance" to “take back" their country.
The announcements came after a joint U.S. and Israeli aerial bombardment that targeted Iranian military and governmental sites. Trump said the “heavy and pinpoint bombing" was to continue through the week or as long as necessary.
Iran responded by firing drones and missiles at Israel and U.S. military installations around the Gulf, and also at the global business hub of Dubai. Earlier Sunday, Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard threatened to launch its “most-intense offensive operation" ever targeting Israel and U.S. bases.
