The United Nations’ humanitarian chief issued a stark warning on the global cost of the war involving Iran, saying the money being spent on conflict could have funded emergency aid capable of saving 87 million lives. Tom Fletcher, who heads the UN humanitarian agency, said around $2 billion is being spent for every day the conflict continues. By comparison, he said his agency’s highly prioritised global relief plan required $23 billion in total- an amount that could have been covered in less than two weeks of war spending.

Tom Fletcher said the opportunity cost of the conflict was devastating, telling The Guardian, “For every day of this conflict, $2bn is being spent. My entire target for a hyper-prioritised plan to save 87 million lives is $23bn. We could have funded that in less than a fortnight of this reckless war. Now, of course, we cannot."

Why Is UN Warning About Wider Global Fallout?

Tom Fletcher said the impact of the war extends far beyond West Asia. Rising food and fuel prices are already pushing inflation closer to 20% in some vulnerable economies, with poorer countries expected to bear the heaviest burden. He warned that more people in sub-Saharan Africa and East Africa could be pushed into poverty as energy costs rise and food supply chains remain under pressure. According to the UN, the economic shockwaves may be felt for years.

Why Is UN Short Of Humanitarian Funds?

The humanitarian agency is already facing a severe funding crisis, with Tom Fletcher saying his budget has effectively been cut by 50%. The squeeze comes amid broader reductions in overseas development aid by major donor countries, where governments are increasingly diverting spending toward defence and domestic priorities. Tom Fletcher also criticised political dysfunction in the UK, saying more than a decade of internal political battles had left Britain in a “defensive crouch" internationally.

Tom Fletcher also expressed alarm over the growing normalisation of violent rhetoric by world leaders, specifically citing US President Donald Trump. He warned that language threatening to “blow stuff up" or “bomb you back to the stone ages" creates dangerous precedents. Such rhetoric gives cover to authoritarian leaders elsewhere to justify attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in breach of international law, he said.

How Is Iran War Affecting India’s Economy?

The conflict may also weigh on India’s growth outlook. According to a recent World Bank assessment, India’s real GDP growth is now expected to fall below the 7% mark because of the disruption caused by the war and its effect on global energy supplies. India’s government had estimated growth of 7.2% before the conflict escalated. The World Bank now projects growth at 6.6% in FY27, assuming prolonged disruption in oil and gas supply through the end of 2026.
