Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, on Monday said that despite being kept in solitary confinement, her brother remains “strong and will not break".

Speaking to CNN-News18, Aleema said people were raising concerns about Imran Khan’s solitary confinement, but stressed that the bigger question was why he continues to remain in prison.

“When you have already achieved your objectives by keeping Imran Khan in prison and through the 26th and 27th amendments, then the question arise, why is Imran Khan still in prison today?," she noted.

Aleema alleged that votes were rigged by a small group of lawmakers to get the amendments passed and claimed that the judiciary was weakened to ensure Imran Khan remained behind bars.

Aleema accused those in power of placing themselves above the Constitution and the law. Despite this, she said, Imran Khan is still in jail because he is the “voice of the people". She dismissed talk of negotiations, calling it a distraction, and questioned why hurdles continued to exist if dialogue was genuinely taking place.

She also referred to senior leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s call for action on February 8. “They want to silence the voice of the people," she said, adding that anyone who speaks for Imran Khan or for the rule of law is now being sent to jail.

“We stand firm. If you must throw us in jail, go ahead. We will never back down," she stressed.

Khan Denied Legal Counsel

Imran Khan, 73, has been in prison since August 2023. Several cases were filed against him after his government was removed in April 2022.

On Monday, his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has claimed that he has been denied access to legal counsel and kept in solitary confinement for more than three months.

The party noted that “prolonged solitary confinement is viewed under international law as harmful and potentially constituting cruel, inhuman when imposed without clear justification or safeguards, the reason why it’s drawing concern among the supporters and the leadership."

“Even the basic necessities guaranteed under the jail manual have been denied to him," PTI alleged.
