Senior US defence officials have told congressional staff there was no intelligence indicating that Iran planned to attack American forces before the US‑Israeli military strikes, a source told Reuters.

In closed‑door briefings on Sunday, Pentagon officials acknowledged there were no clear signs Tehran intended to launch a first attack against the United States, according to two people familiar with the discussions.

The officials said that while Iran’s ballistic missiles were viewed as posing an imminent threat to US interests in the region, the assessment did not include any evidence that Iran had decided to strike American forces before being hit.
