External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday said India and the United States are on the brink of concluding a “historic" trade agreement, marking a significant step forward in bilateral relations between the two countries.

Wrapping up a visit to Washington, Jaishankar described his engagements as “productive and positive," and thanked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his hospitality. He said the proposed India–US trade deal is in the final stages of detailing and is expected to be completed “very soon."

“The agreement opens up a new phase in our bilateral ties, with vast possibilities for the relationship," Jaishankar said, underscoring the scale and ambition of the pact.

Beyond trade, the external affairs minister pointed to rapid progress in critical mineral cooperation, an area of growing strategic importance amid global supply chain realignments. He added that both sides are set to deepen engagement on strategic issues, defence cooperation and energy partnerships in the coming days.

“Overall, a strong momentum is evident," Jaishankar said, signalling confidence that the recent talks will translate into tangible outcomes.

India and the United States have been steadily expanding cooperation across economic, strategic and security domains since President Donald Trump’s announcement on his social media platform on Monday that he will be bringing down tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent from the previous 50 per cent.

Moreover, on Thursday, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced that an India-US trade deal will be signed by March of this year.
