A senior culture writer at Wired has claimed that an Indian medical student generated thousands of dollars by allegedly deceiving followers aligned with the MAGA movement through an AI-generated influencer persona named ‘Emily Hart’.
“I spoke to a med student in India who made thousands of dollars duping MAGA fans by creating a blonde AI influencer named ‘Emily Hart.’ Here’s how he did it," the journalist said in a post on X.
According to the X post, the student, identified as “Sam," used generative AI tools to create a fictional character presented as a 20-year-old nurse based in New York City, carefully designed to appeal to conservative audiences.
The journalist added that Sam “fed an image of Sydney Sweeney into a custom ChatGPT tool" to generate the influencer persona.
The X post further quoted Sam as saying the account rapidly gained traction online.
“Every Reel I posted was getting 3 million views, 5 million views," adding, “I haven’t seen any easier way to make money online."
REPORT DETAILS HOW THE AI PERSONA WAS CREATED
According to a Wired report cited by multiple outlets, the 22-year-old medical student initially experimented with generic AI-generated images but saw limited engagement before pivoting to a niche strategy targeting conservative audiences.
The report states that Sam built the persona as a pro-Christian, pro-gun and conservative-leaning influencer, sharing politically charged content combined with lifestyle imagery such as fishing trips and patriotic themes.
Sam told Wired that AI guidance suggested focusing on a “MAGA/conservative niche," which he described as a “cheat code" for engagement due to perceived loyalty among followers.
According to the report, Emily Hart’s content included imagery of a blonde influencer participating in activities such as ice fishing and shooting firearms, accompanied by captions promoting conservative ideological positions.
ACCOUNT VIRALITY AND SOCIAL MEDIA GROWTH
The AI-generated influencer quickly gained visibility, reportedly attracting thousands of followers within weeks and generating millions of views on short-form video content.
According to the X post and Wired report, Sam claimed, “Every Reel I posted was getting 3 million views, 5 million views, 10 million views. The algorithm loved it."
The rapid growth demonstrated how AI-generated personas can leverage platform algorithms by combining visually appealing content with politically polarising messaging designed to drive engagement.
Experts cited in the Wired report said synthetic personas are becoming increasingly convincing due to advances in generative AI technology.
Valerie Wirtschafter of the Brookings Institution noted that “AI has made them more believable."
MONETISATION THROUGH FANSLY AND SUBSCRIPTION CONTENT
According to the X post, Sam monetised the AI persona primarily through subscription-based platforms, including Fansly, where followers paid for exclusive content such as AI-generated images.
“He regularly DMed with horny men who followed her, sending AI-generated bikini pics," the journalist wrote in the X post.
Reports citing Wired indicate the student generated thousands of dollars per month through paid content and merchandise linked to the influencer persona.
Sam reportedly said the venture required minimal effort, stating he spent less than an hour daily managing the account while earning income exceeding typical student earnings.
CONTROVERSY OVER COMMENTS TARGETING MAGA FOLLOWERS
The journalist’s X post also quoted Sam making controversial remarks about the audience he targeted, stating, “The MAGA crowd is made up of super dumb people. And they fall for it."
Similar comments were cited in coverage of the Wired report, where Sam allegedly described the audience as highly responsive to emotionally charged content.
The case has sparked debate about misinformation, political manipulation and the ethics of AI-generated personas designed to influence or monetise online audiences.
According to reports referencing the Wired investigation, the Emily Hart account was eventually removed from Instagram after being flagged for fraudulent activity.
The incident has been cited by experts as an example of how generative AI can be used to construct realistic digital identities capable of influencing political discourse and generating revenue through targeted engagement strategies.
Analysts warn that the rise of AI-generated influencers may complicate efforts to maintain transparency and authenticity across social media ecosystems, particularly when such accounts blur the distinction between real and synthetic personalities.
