A tragic and horrifying incident in Indonesia has once again brought attention to the dangers of living near wildlife during floods. On May 27, a 28-year-old pregnant woman named Munirah was attacked and killed by a crocodile while cooking lunch in her stilted hut. She was eight months pregnant at the time of the attack.
Munirah’s home, like many others in the area, was built on stilts above floodwaters after recent heavy rains caused widespread flooding. The rising waters of the Mambulu River had brought dangerous animals like crocodiles closer to human settlements. On that day, one of them managed to reach Munirah’s kitchen and dragged her into the river.
Her sister, who was in a neighboring hut, rushed to help after hearing her screams—but it was too late. Despite Munirah’s desperate efforts to hold onto a tree branch and fight back, she was overpowered and pulled under.
Villagers searched the river following the attack. Though some spotted the crocodile and tried to shoot it, it slipped away into the murky water. Munirah’s body was found floating half an hour later. Local police chief AKP Supriyadi confirmed her death, noting that her advanced pregnancy left her too weak to resist the attack.
This is not the first such tragedy in the region. Last year, a fisherman named Ridwan Navir also lost his life in a similar crocodile attack. Authorities have now issued warnings urging residents to be extremely cautious around rivers and flooded areas.
The incident underscores the increasing threat of wildlife encounters during natural disasters and the urgent need for improved safety measures. On social media, many users have expressed sorrow and concern, calling for better protection and support for communities living in flood-prone regions.
Munirah’s death is a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those whose homes border the wilderness—especially during times when nature turns hostile.
