There was drama during the IPL 2026 match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) in Mullanpur on Tuesday as the Titans' batter Rahul Tewatia walked out to bat.

Rahul Tewatia walked out to bat at No 7, following the dismissal of Washington Sundar in the 18th over.

However, the on-field umpires intervened just as he was about to take strike, as they wanted to do a gauge test of the bat.

The gauge test has become prominent in the IPL and international cricket. This rule, in place in the IPL since 2025, bars players from using oversized bats.

Rahul Tewatia's bat fails gauge test

Rahul Tewatia's bat failed the gauge test, and the umpires asked him to change it. In 2018, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) was the first to implement this regulation.

According to Law 5 of the Marylebone Cricket Club’s Laws of Cricket, the edges of a bat should not be more than 4 cm (1.56 inches), and the maximum overall depth of the bat must be 6.7 cm (2.64 inches). The width of the bat cannot be more than 10.8 cm (4.25 inches).

Tewatia walked out to bat with Gujarat Titans in a spot of bother at 144/5, and scored an unbeaten 11 runs from 10 balls to help Gujarat Titans post 162/6.

Shubman Gill top-scored for the visitors with 39 runs from 27 balls, whereas Vijaykumar Vyshak (3/34) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/28) were the standout bowlers for Punjab Kings.

In their reply, the Shreyas Iyer-led side found themselves in trouble at 118/6 in the 15th over, but Australian youngster Cooper Connolly slammed an unbeaten 72 runs from 44 balls to take the hosts home.

He, along with fellow Australian Xavier Bartlett, forged a 21-run stand off nine balls for the eighth wicket, as Punjab Kings chased down the target with five balls to spare.
