Iranian forces fired warning missiles at four vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without prior coordination with Iranian authorities, state broadcaster IRIB reported on Thursday.
According to Iranian media reports, the incident took place at around 12:35 a.m. local time, when the vessels allegedly attempted to enter the Persian Gulf without informing Iranian security forces.
“They were warned, but after they ignored the warning, warning shots were fired at them, forcing them to return," IRIB said in a statement carried on Telegram.
Iranian-linked media outlets claimed the vessels failed to comply with maritime coordination procedures imposed by Tehran amid heightened tensions in the Gulf. However, the identities of the ships and their destinations were not immediately disclosed.
The development comes amid escalating confrontation between the United States and Iran following recent US military strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has accused Tehran of threatening commercial shipping and American forces operating in the region.
US officials earlier said American forces had intercepted Iranian attack drones targeting a US-linked commercial vessel and later struck an Iranian drone-launching unit before it could carry out further attacks.
