Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has declared that the country is on the verge of what he called a “great victory" in its confrontation with the United States and Israel, even as military tensions flared in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking on Thursday, Aref projected confidence that years of economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran were nearing an end. His comments, carried by state-run Press TV, suggested that the Islamic Republic expects an imminent easing of sanctions and international isolation.
“We will soon hold our victory celebration, and the sanctions and pressures that have been imposed on the Iranian nation over recent years will be lifted with the great victory of the Iranian nation," Aref said. He framed the current situation as the final phase of a long campaign against what Tehran views as systematic external pressure.
Aref’s remarks came just hours after reports of renewed hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint for global oil shipments. Both Iran and the United States exchanged fire in the area on the same day, further heightening regional tensions.
Tehran accused Washington of violating an existing ceasefire, claiming that US actions had undermined ongoing de-escalation efforts. American officials, however, insisted they had no intention of escalating the conflict and maintained that the truce remained in force.
US President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Iran’s leadership, saying that the United States would respond with greater force if a formal agreement is not reached soon. “We’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently," Trump said.
In a phone interview with Rachel Scott, Senior Political Correspondent for ABC News, Trump downplayed the latest clashes, describing recent US military strikes as “just a love tap." When asked directly whether the incidents signalled the end of the ceasefire, he replied, “No, no, the ceasefire is going. It’s in effect."
Trump also used his Truth Social platform to confirm that three US destroyers had “transited very successfully" out of the Strait of Hormuz. He said the ships came under fire from Iranian forces but claimed that the attacking naval boats were “completely destroyed," and that missiles and drones targeting the American vessels were intercepted.
As Iranian leaders speak of impending victory and US officials insist the ceasefire still stands, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, with both sides signalling resolve while claiming they are not seeking a wider conflict.
